Our Sports Science and Biomechanical Engineering Laboratory Intern will contribute to Sanford operations and processes while obtaining first-hand experience that align with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. The Lab focuses on sport performance, musculoskeletal injury and rehabilitation, and orthopedics research as well as athletic services. Investigators apply knowledge of exercise physiology, biomechanics, orthopedics, and sports medicine to clinical, laboratory and field-based research in a comprehensive effort to study real world problems and develop meaningful solutions. Interns will be responsible for assisting staff members at all stages of the research process. This includes cleaning, maintaining, and preparing laboratory work areas, developing teaching simulation models for orthopedic physicians and, designing research projects, pilot testing, collecting data, and analyzing data. Interns will also be responsible for developing various written materials including extensive literature reviews, institutional review board applications, grants, and manuscripts. Interns will have the opportunity to use biomechanical testing equipment, mechanical tools, two- and three-dimensional motion capture systems, surface electromyography, force plates, LabVIEW, AutoCAD, MATLAB, statistics programs, and other data acquisition systems as appropriate to meet various research project and services goals. Interns are expected to develop case reports, presentations, or scientific abstracts at the conclusion of the internship that summarizes the scope of a project they assisted with, which will be presented to department leadership or at a local, regional, or national conference. Students with or presently obtaining an undergraduate or advanced degree in kinesiology, exercise science/physiology, biomechanics, engineering, physical therapy, and medicine (MD/DO/PA) with are encouraged to apply. Must commit to the hours scheduled during the 12-week internship.
Current enrollment or recent graduate of an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program from an accredited college or university. Knowledge of healthcare industry preferred. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
